The American Folk Art Museum shares untold stories of the Black experience in the North in this expansive exhibition, with the goal of seeking to correct and challenge the long-held notion that slavery and Black oppression are solely issues stemming from the South. Through 125 works, including paintings, photographs and needlework, the show highlights Black life (most notably its absence) in the early American North—particularly New England and the mid-Atlantic states from the early 17th century through the late 19th century.
